Hi Kids,
This page is just for you. BUT there are rules. Before you go to any of the sites here, be sure you have permission from an adult (your Mom or Dad, your teacher, or someone you can trust.)
The web is like visiting a new, big city. There are lots of wonderful things to see, but there are also some people who are not very nice, and it's not always easy to tell who they are. So PLEASE, follow all the rules.
Rule 1. Never give out personal information like your name, address, age, race, phone number, or the name or location of your school without your parents or teachers permission.
Rule 2. If the site you are looking at has a link to another site, don't click on it. Ask an adult to check it out before you go there. Sometimes, good sites can be linked to bad ones.
Rule 3. Tell your teacher or parent right away if you come across any information that makes you feel uncomfortable.
Rule 4. Never enter any contest or do anything that could cost your family money unless your parents are there to help you.
Rule 5. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS ask your parents or teacher before sending an e-mail.
Rule 6. Never open e-mail from people you don't really know or trust, and remember about not giving out personal information.
Rule 7. Never, ever agree to meet with someone you talk to online, and never send a picture to someone you do not know. Remember that people online may not be who they say they are.
Rule 8. Do not answer any message that is mean or makes you feel uncomfortable. If you get a message like this, log off the computer and tell your parents or teacher right away!
Rule 9. Do not give your internet password to anyone except your parents.
Rule 10. Be a good online citizen and don't do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.
I know that's an awful lot of rules, but going online is a big responsibility.
Ready? Then let's go surfing!
I'm not going to tell you about all of these sites. That's part of the fun, exploring and seeing what each one has. When you find one you really like you can "bookmark" it so
that you can return to it next time. See if you
can figure out what each site is before you click on
it.
bonus.com/ Another funny address but there are lots of things to do here.)
There are lots more places to visit. I even gave your parents another list. Ask them to get it from their website.
Got questions? Here's a place where you can type in a question like "Why is the sky blue?" and it will provide answers. Be sure you spell all your words correctly.(Machines can be pretty dumb sometimes.)
Got a homework question? Try factmonster. All the tools you need are here. Ask an adult if you need help getting started.
Good Browsers for Kids.
Sometimes links don't work the way they are supposed to. If you click on a link and it doesn't work or you are taken to a place you didn't expect let your teacher know at once, then try logging on to the site by typing in the address on your browser and let me know what happens. Sometimes, the address is correct but the link doesn't work for reasons that even people who work with computers don't understand., but most of the time it's because we make a little mistake in the address. For example, here are some mistakes I've made. I meant to type pets, but instead I typed pest. So instead of dogs and cats, I got roaches and rats. I meant to type solarviews, but I left off the last s. So instead of pictures of space, I got an ad for window coverings. So be very careful when you type. Spelling really is important.
If you use a search engine, typing a single word will search all subjects with that word in it. For example, if you type the word ball, it will search ball, football, baseball, basketball and even ball gown.
If you want to search for a specific subject, use quotation marks. For example, if you type "ball", it will return only ball, not football too.
If you type two words, the computer uses the blank space between the words as the word "and".
You can use words like "and", "or", and "not" when searching. For example, you can type puzzles and games to find information on both. You can type dogs or puppy to find information that has the word dog or puppy in it. You can type pets not dogs to find information on all pets except dogs.
Finally, if you find a good site that we don't have listed here, let me know. Maybe we can add it to your page.
